Jussi Kallio’s journey started with a master’s thesis that opened the door to a technology he quickly realized had extraordinary potential: hyperspectral imaging. This is a type of imaging that reveals details far beyond what the human eye can see, turning materials, products, and processes into rich layers of information that help solve real-world challenges.
Even at that early stage, Jussi could see how extensive the reach of this technology could be. Agriculture, food inspection, textiles, recycling: “a broad spectrum of applications,” as he puts it. So, what started as a research topic became something much bigger: an opportunity to work on solutions that have a positive impact on the world around us.
From product specialist to regional leader
Four years ago, when Jussi joined Specim, a Konica Minolta company in Finland, he couldn't have imagined how swiftly his career path would unfold. Having started as a product specialist in airborne imaging, he soon found himself drawn toward customer‑facing roles. He spent time on factory floors, at exhibitions, and in meeting rooms across Asia, working directly with people to understand their challenges and uncover solutions together.
As his role grew, his responsibilities shifted, and before long he was managing sales for the entire APAC region, later stepping into the role of Business Area Manager. Today, as Senior Technical Sales Manager for APAC, Jussi continues to be the link between engineering, global partners, and a region full of technological ambition.
On the ground where innovation happens
Travel has always been part of Jussi's life, but Asia became something more for him: a second professional home. Rather than being exhausted by all the long flights, jet lag, and meetings in Bangkok, Seoul, and Tokyo, he finds it energizing. “Being physically there with the customer, seeing what they're dealing with … it’s a completely different experience from a video call,” he explains.
Jussi also spent six months in Japan as part of Konica Minolta’s global talent program, GLOW, learning what it means to operate within a global corporation: the complexity, the different perspectives, the slower but more considered decision making. He also learned how much can be achieved when silos get broken down and conversations become open and genuine exchanges. “It changed everything for me,” he recalls. “It helped me see how much more we could achieve together.”

“The GLOW program showed me how much more we can achieve when silos are broken down and collaboration becomes truly open.”
Turning invisible data into real-world impact
Behind all this is the technology he's grown so close to. Although it's not easy to explain hyperspectral imaging in a single sentence, its impact is easy to understand once you see it in action. Think about: cameras that can identify plastics invisible to the human eye, helping recyclers sort materials that would otherwise end up wasted. Devices that can detect tiny amounts of contaminants in baby food, increasing safety where it matters most. Instruments that can analyze textile fibers and reveal the exact material composition, opening the door to smarter, more sustainable production.
And, more recently, breakthroughs in semiconductors and high tech manufacturing, fields where accuracy is measured in micrometers and opportunities are only just beginning to unfold.
Jussi says he's driven by the knowledge that the solutions he works on help companies manufacture products more safely, more efficiently, more sustainably; and that he's playing a part in building the bridge between technology and real world use.

“We have an impact in food safety and quality control. For example, in baby food, our devices can detect anomalies like plastic parts much more reliably than before. That really brings me motivation.”
Connecting people and technology
But what truly lights Jussi up is the people behind it all. The distributors who rely on his guidance. The Konica Minolta teams in Asia who share local insights. The engineers in Finland who turn ideas into instruments. He sees his role as enabling them, providing them with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to work with a technology that can initially seem complex. “As their understanding grows, so does their motivation,” he says. “Then anything becomes possible.”
At the front edge of what comes next
Looking ahead, Jussi senses that the next chapter is just beginning. More industries are ready to adopt hyperspectral imaging, and new applications are revealed every month. Countries like Japan and Korea, with their strong technological focus, are pushing boundaries in ways that even Jussi, with all his experience, didn’t anticipate a few years ago. Being part of that shift, right at the point where innovation meets implementation, is what fuels him.
A great place for explorers!
Ultimately, Jussi's message to anyone considering joining this field is simple: This is a place where exploration is part of the job. Where you’re encouraged to experiment, to discover, to build something new. Where no one has all the answers yet — which is precisely what makes it so exciting.
And that is perhaps what defines Jussi’s story best: a journey driven by curiosity, human connection, and the belief that technology can genuinely shape a better future when people dare to push it forward together.
