Access control in hospital increases security and safety

Smart video surveillance for access control and temperature measurement increases security and safety in multiprofile hospital for active treatment “Yuliya Vreska” in Byala municipality.

The hospital in the Municipality of Byala - “Yulia Vrevska” has a 120-year history of providing health care to the residents of the municipalities of Byala, Tsenovo, Dve Mogili and Polski Trambesh. Over the years, the hospital has established itself as a diagnostic, consultation, and treatment centre for about 38 thousand people.

The management of the hospital contacted its longest-standing and consistent partner Vipimex Ltd. in order to introduce a solution for smart video surveillance in the critical areas of the health facility. Vipimex Ltd. has been on the market for 26 years, promoting the Konica Minolta brand and increasing its market share on the territory of Bulgaria.

The hospital has now introduced access control with facial recognition that only allows those who have previously been registered on an approved list into the department. An access control system with temperature measurement has also been installed at the entrance of the hospital, which prevents employees and visitors with fever from entering the hospital.

Challenge

Challenge
Hospitals and other healthcare facilities carry out a wide range of activities, including life-saving interventions, which need to be carried out quickly while ensuring the protection of patients, staff, and property at all times. This is one of the reasons why the management of the healthcare facility looked for a video surveillance solution with access control and temperature measurement of visitors and employees.

Among the main challenges of the hospital are:
  • Lack of prevention by staff/medical personnel who enter the hospital with fever
  • Unregulated access of people in departments with restricted mode, as a result of the use of cards and readers that can be used by third parties
  • Lack of access control at the entrance and exit of the health facility
  • Insufficiently precise monitoring of the territory of the health facility

Solution

Solution
A complete video surveillance solution through the integration of Mobotix with SAFR
The solutions that were implemented in the hospital in Byala through the high-quality video infrastructure
from the German manufacturer of IP cameras MOBOTIX are:

(1) Access control with facial recognition in an restriced mode area
The solution for access control with facial recognition is a modern way to automatically and reliably provide access in restricted areas, such as the surgical department of the healthcare facility. Through the use of this solution, control of the flow of people in rooms with limited access mode is achieved by installing cameras near the entrance/exit of the department. The system automatically detects individuals, and only those who have previously been entered into an approved list, are admitted to the department. When a person who is not recognised by the system attempts to enter the department, they will be denied entry. This solves the problem of unregulated access in the departments, such as check-in access with cards used by third parties.

(2) Access control with temperature measurement at the entrance of the hospital
The second solution implemented upgrades access control at the hospital entrance with temperature
detection of visitors and hospital workers. MOBOTIX thermal cameras measure extremely precisely the
thermal radiation from objects and people and can send automatic notifications in order to implement
subsequent preventive actions. In this way, security is increased and access to the building is prevented
to a person who may represent a potential danger.

Advantages

Advantages
  • Access to the department for staff included in an approved list based on photos and pre-training in relation to the system, by eliminating the need to use cards and readers
  • Hospital access monitoring combined with thermal screening that prevents employees and visitors with fever from entering the hospital
  • Ability to upgrade; entering/excluding access of persons
  • Receiving alarm messages in order to implement subsequent preventive actions
