Announcement about Varnish Information

  • Some MGI ink and varnish products contain diphenyl (2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl) phosphine oxide (TPO), a photoinitiator used in UV-curable inks.
  • Under the EU and UK CLP Regulation, the reproductive-toxicity classification of TPO changed from Category 2 (Suspected) to Category 1B (Presumed toxic) as of 1 September 2025.
  • Labels and Safety Data Sheets must reflect this classification.
  • TPO was also listed as a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC) under the REACH Regulation in June 2023.
  • For finished printed materials, residual TPO levels are generally below 0.1 % w/w due to UV curing; therefore, normal use cases are not affected.
  • Applications involving food-contact or pharmaceutical packaging must comply with additional regional regulations (e.g. Swiss Ordinances, Nestlé Guidance).

Konica Minolta is:

  • Fully complying with all applicable regulations;
  • Closely monitoring regulatory developments;
  • Developing TPO-free alternatives to meet customer and safety expectations.
