The Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JPD) has awarded Konica Minolta Inc. (Konica Minolta) the Japanese Good Design Award 2014 for the innovative architectural design of the Konica Minolta research and development labs in the city of Hachioji close to Tokyo.

Langenhagen/Germany, December 2nd, 2014In April 2014 Konica Minolta opened its “Smart R&D Office for Knowledge Work and Transboundary Communication” (SKT) on their core technology development campus in Hachioji. The SKT was launched for the development of digital printing systems and as a “co-creation field”, a special place to drive open innovation for customers and external partners. The new building represents the company’s brand message “Giving Shape to Ideas” as well as the brand concepts “light” and “colour”.Corporate branding and values perfectly integrated into architectural designKonica Minolta’s innovative thoughts were reflected in different elements of the SKT building. The atrium is the centre of the offices in a wide interior space with the sunlight coming through the top skylight. Wide staircases are designed to give engineers and researchers opportunities to meet each other and to encourage face-to-face communication and discussions. There are more than 50 conference rooms, which were named after different artists, to support global collaboration. In addition, environmental sustainability, which is one of Konica Minolta’s key corporate values, is reflected in the design. The SKT includes solar panels on the rooftop, lighting sensors to control energy consumption on lighting, and effective ventilation to reduce the consumption of resources.About the Good Design AwardGood Design Award is a comprehensive and annual program that evaluates and commends outstanding design.
